The Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO),Jose Graziano da Silva said food prices could fall this year as a result of slowing global economic growth, but it will not record a significant decline compared to the levels attained by these high prices.

The official said the new Graziano - who took office with the start of 2012, succeedingJacques Diouf, Senegalese - is expected to continue the volatility in food markets, and addother people in the world list of threatened hunger as a result of the absence of political stability.

The index of food prices in the world - adopted by the FAO - has hit a record last February, and prices have been declining since June following the improvement in the size of thecrops affected by the global growth and fears of the current economic turmoil.

FAO and the crisisGraziano said that he is not expected to affect the debt crisis of Europe to fund FAO projects that the contribution of the countries of this region in the projects mentioned are only a small percentage of its gross domestic product, and therefore not expected to stop payment of these contributions.

The spokesman added that the same global economic slowdown will leave more of those at risk of famine in the world, "and therefore the FAO work more with the hungry and unemployed, and we must find new ways to help these people."

The FAO, which are based in Rome it had warned last November that while the decline in food prices, the volatility of global commodity market continues to harm the prospects for global food security.
Priority for AfricaThe director of the FAO (62 years), the first person from Latin America to hold this position, he will focus the organization's efforts to support poor countries most in need of foreign aid, especially in the African continent, and in this regard is planning Graziano to visit the countries of the Horn of Africa suffering from starvation after to attend the African Union summit later this month.
The suffering of the African countries in the region, particularly Somalia, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, one of the most dry seasons in the world in half a century, leading to a lack of nutrition and scarcity of food supplies.
