Some US legislators abandon anti-piracy bills

At least six members of the US Congress have switched sides to oppose anti-piracy legislation as protests blanketed the internet, turning Wikipedia dark and putting black slashes on Google and other sites as if they had been censored.

The legislators, including Senators Marco Rubio, Roy Blunt and John Boozman, said they were withdrawing their support, and blamed Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid for not heeding criticisms of the Senate version of the bills.

Friends of the bills, meanwhile, stepped up their efforts on Wednesday.

Creative America, a studio- and union-supported group that fights piracy, launched a television advertising campaign that it said would air in the districts of key legislators. In Times Square, it turned on a digital pro-SOPA and PIPA billboard for the day, in space provided by News Corp, which owns Fox Studios.

The group also said it is sending a team of 20 organisers to big events around the country, including the upcoming Sundance Film Festival, to try to get voters to see the situation their way.

Some volunteer editors of Wikipedia said the protest of anti-piracy legislation could threaten the credibility of their work.

"My main concern is that it puts the organisation in the role of advocacy, and that's a slippery slope," said Robert Lawton, a computer consultant and site editor who would prefer that the encyclopaedia stick to being a neutral repository of knowledge.

"Before we know it, we're blacked out because we want to save the whales."

During the 24-hour blackout, Wikipedia visitors can only see a black-and-white page which says, "Imagine a world without free knowledge", with a link to information about the controversial Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA).

The site urges Wikipedia readers in the US to contact their local congressman to vote against the bills. "This is a quite clumsily drafted legislation which is dangerous for an open internet," Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia, said.

Google and others used the black censorship bars to draw attention to what had until recently been an obscure and technical legislative proposal to curb access to overseas websites that traffic in stolen content or counterfeit goods.

'Don't censor the web'

Ben Huh, the founder of the popular Cheezburger humour network, said on his Twitter feed that his 58 sites would also observe a blackout on Wednesday.

Search engine Google added a link to a petition against the bills on its site, reading, "Tell Congress: Please don't censor the web!".

Social media-sharing Reddit launched a 12-hour blackout, starting at 13:00 GMT.

But Dick Costollo, the chief executive of Twitter, said that while he opposed the SOPA legislation, shutting down the service was out of the question.

"Closing a global business in reaction to single-issue national politics is foolish," Costollo tweeted.
The bills pit technology companies such as Google and Facebook against the bill's supporters, including Hollywood studios and music labels, which say the legislation is needed to protect intellectual property and jobs.
The proposed SOPA legislation aims to crack down on online sales of pirated US movies, music or other goods by forcing internet companies to block access to foreign sites offering material that violates US copyright laws.
US advertising networks could also be required to stop online ads, and search engines would be barred from directly linking to websites found to be distributing pirated goods.
However, supporters argue the bill is unlikely to have an impact on US-based websites.
Google has repeatedly said the bill goes too far and could hurt investment.
Along with other internet companies, it has run advertisements in major newspapers urging Washington legislators to rethink its approach.
The founders of Google, Twitter, Wikipedia, Yahoo! and other internet giants said in an open letter last month the legislation would give the US government "power to censor the web using techniques similar to those used by China, Malaysia and Iran".
"We oppose these bills because there are smart, targeted ways to shut down foreign rogue websites without asking American companies to censor the internet," a Google spokesman said on Tuesday.

Founder of file-sharing site denies piracy

MegaUpload.com founder Kim Dotcom, right, was arrested on Friday in a New Zealand raid[Reuters]

The founder of popular file-sharing website MegaUpload.com has denied charges of internet piracy and money laundering, three days after his arrest in the New Zealand city of Auckland.

Kim Dotcom, a German national also known as Kim Schmitz, appeared in court on Monday, demanding his release from prison on bail and stating his innocence.

His lawyer, Paul Davison, told the bail hearing that Dotcom, who has New Zealand and Hong Kong residency, had not been involved in any criminal activity.

"This is not a case where there will be any concession by Mr Dotcom," Davison told the North Shore District Court in Auckland. Davison added that Dotcom's company was only offering online storage.

However, prosecutor Anne Toohey described Dotcom as an "extreme" flight risk and explained that he had fled to Thailand when he was previously wanted on charges in Germany.

She said electronic bail was also opposed as it would give Dotcom likely access to phones and the internet.

The judge, David McNaughton, declined to make an immediate decision on whether or not grant him bail.

McNaughton said the bail application was too complicated for an immediate ruling, adding he would issue a
written decision no later than Wednesday.

"Given the breadth of issues covered in this bail application and the seriousness of the issues, I am going to reserve my decision," the judge said.

Facing extradition

Working with US authorities, police in New Zealand arrested Dotcom with three other people during a raid on his home on Friday. He faces extradition to the United States to answer charges related to one of the largest ever cases of copyright theft.

He is among seven people indicted by the US justice department and FBI, which said he was "responsible for massive worldwide online piracy of numerous types of copyrighted works, through MegaUpload.com and other related sites".

Dotcom generated more than $175m in proceeds and caused more than $500m in harm to copyright owners by offering pirated copies of movies, TV programmes and other content, according to a statement.

Meanwhile, a report in the New Zealand Herald newspaper has detailed claims about Dotcom's alleged lavish lifestyle.

It reported that Dotcom ordered around $3.2m of renovations to the sprawling mansion that he leased near Auckland, with manicured lawns, fountains, pools, palm-lined paths and extensive security.

New Zealand police seized luxury cars worth US$4.8 million, including a 1959 pink Cadillac and a Rolls Royce Phantom, during Friday's raid on Dotcom's Auckland mansion.

The case comes with the issue of online piracy under discussion in Washington, where the US congress is trying to craft tougher legislation, prompting protests by those who argue that restrictions on the internet threaten free speech.

Basketball in court

Cell phone video surveillance solution

Basketball is pretty much the only sport "invented" in America that has easily crossed international borders.

Unlike Gridiron, the US version of football, and baseball, the game is played the world over.

But now, here in the US, professional basketball players have announced a surprise play.

At a meeting in New York they rejected the latest pay offer from their league, the National Basketball Association (NBA), and they're saying, "See you in a law court guys."

The National Basketball Players' Association is also winding-up its own union.
The decision throws into doubt the entire 2011/2012 basketball season.

Derek Fisher is a former NBA star who is now president of the association of NBA players (NBPA):

"After two years of making a genuine and concerted effort to try and close a collective bargaining agreement with our teams and with the league we've come to the conclusion today that that process has not worked for us."

The players bold move to disband the union and sue the employers means the current basketball season seems very unlikely to go ahead.

The NBA long ago cancelled games through to December 15, and league Commissioner David Stern is calling the decision to reject the latest deal a tragedy. He says the threat to sue the NBA is a tactic that won't work.

Grant Wahl, is a journalist for Sports Illustrated magazine. He told Al Jazeera English that a 50-50 split between the employers and the players was on the table over 72 games starting in December, but the players objected to what they saw as too many restrictions on their earning power under the terms of the deal.

"These players only have a certain amount of time in the league and they would like to be earning money right now ... it's a possibility that David Stern and the NBA owners could decide to void contracts and then it could be a complete free for all."

The NBA says last season wasn't profitable enough for most of the league's thirty owners. All but the top clubs are so-called "loss leaders" for their owners, giving them a sense of pride but little in the way of hard cash.

In a sports bar in Washington DC, just a basketball's throw from the White House, fans had mixed reactions.

Robbie Zabel: "Neither side has really handled themselves particularly well throughout the whole process so I'm not really that surprised"

Amrut Pati: "The last few years have been some of the best seasons in NBA I mean the NBA is back to where it was really competitive again and now its ... you know they have the lockout it kind of freezes up the momentum and the game"

Dennis Broderick: "All I've got to say is when's baseball season start? - who cares about basketball"

True die-hard fans do!

Now though, apart from friendly exhibition games, they may have to wait until the 2012 Olympics in London before they get to see their favourite big-time players on court - rather than in court - again.
