Topless cry for freedom in Ukraine

Police didn't let the women go wild
A group of activists from the confrontational Ukrainian women's movement FEMEN have been seen protesting for freedom in the country in a typically outrageous fashion.
Four topless but fearless women gathered in front of the government building in Kiev and started tearing up the lawn.
The women, dressed only in orange skirts with national scarves around their heads, were apparently protesting against recent events in Ukraine, including the arrest of former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko and the lack of freedom in the country.
The display didn’t last long, however, as police moved in within a few seconds. One of the activists was seen being dragged away by police.
The spectacle coincided with another more traditional rally in central Kiev, marking the 20th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence from the Soviet Union. Those attending the rally also called for Tymoshenko to be freed.

Cross to bare: Topless Vatican protest (VIDEO)

Femen demands freedom
A naked female activist from Ukraine’s Femen movement staged a short, but vivid, protest demanding “Freedom for women” in the Vatican’s St. Peter’s Square.
Appearing in the square in a see-through blouse immediately following the Pope’s regular Sunday address, the activist, Aleksandra Shevchenko, waved her banner and started pulling her clothes off. She was detained by Italian police in the space of minutes.
The Italian police were expecting their visit, and Shevchenko’s two associates were captured as they tried to make their way to the square. Femen says an Australian journalist who accompanied them was also detained for questioning.
The activists spent about four hours in detention.
According to a statement, Femen were protesting against the anti-feminist policies of the Vatican that “impose patriarchal, medieval concepts of social and cultural positioning of women.”

“Condemning the usage of contraceptives, worldwide anti-abortion lobby, attempts to restrict the attire and the appearance of women, and prohibition from acquiring church ranks is nothing more than a foul-smelling belch of the witch hunt,” the statement said.
The anti-Pope protest completed Femen’s naked tour of Italy. A day earlier, another topless rally in Rome saw activists painted green, red and white demand the resignation of Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.
“Women really hate Berlusconi. We are trying to show our opinion to all people who are here today. We came to support them and to say that politicians like Berlusconi and Yanukovich cannot protect people who live in their own country,” one Femen protester is quoted as saying by Associated Press.
Femen’s naked protest tour was supported by Italian former porn star and Member of Parliament Ilona Staller. Known by her stage name la Cicciolina, she is famous for delivering political speeches with one breast exposed.
According to Ukrainian Ridus news agency, it was Staller, 59, who invited Femen to Italy in the first place.

Naked ambition: Ukrainian topless protests go global

A naked woman in a city's central square is bound to attract attention, which is exactly what Ukraine’s Femen group is hoping for with a series of high-profile demonstrations against the abuse of women's rights which has made the news across Europe.
And as RT found out, the Ukrainian feminists are ready to conquer new horizons.
On a chilly morning in Kiev, half-naked women in racing outfits drink champagne and chant slogans. This is how the Femen movement celebrated the resignation of Silvio Berlusconi. Several days prior to that, Femen were in Rome, lending their support for the anti-Berlusconi protests.
“We had staged a lot of protests against Berlusconi and his sexual adventures here in Kiev. And we are really happy his political career has finished,” activist Aleksandra Shevchenko told RT.
“But we came to the Italian embassy not only to celebrate, but to say that he needs to go on trial for his sexual crimes,”Femen member Inna Shevchenko added.
For more than a week, Ukraine’s topless protesters have been making themselves heard across Europe on a road trip dedicated to drawing attention to the sexual exploitation of women.
While in Rome, one of their activists even made a revealing protest against injustice towards women in the Catholic Church at the Vatican, right in front of the Pope. Before that, they hit Paris, storming the residence of former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn.
“Women from Italy came to us in Switzerland and said: ‘We know that you’re coming to Rome and will be staging protests against Berlusconi and the Pope. Thank you,’ they said, ‘for sharing our problems,’” Alexandra Shevchenko continued.
Their wild bra-free rallies in Ukraine have been making international headlines for several years, from protesting against the alarming rate of prostitution, especially with the upcoming Euro 2012 football tournament, to exposing flaws in Ukraine’s politics. Now they are looking even further afield.
“We understood that classic feminism no longer works,” Inna Shevchenko said. “It is, if you excuse me, impotent. But what we do brings the desired effect. That’s why not only Ukraine needs us, but Europe as well. We are planning to take over the world.”
The Femen movement has been well-received at home in Ukraine and in Europe, and now its members are planning to extend their reach even further.
“We receive lots of letters telling us to continue fighting religious injustice towards women, especially in Muslim states. That’s where we want to develop,” Alexandra Shevchenko told RT. “We are even ready to go to Iran or any other Islamic state to stage our topless protests, knowing all risks it could entail for us.”
In Ukraine alone, Femen has garnered tens of thousands of supporters. The network has taken root in Europe and now stretches as far as the United States. But with sex-tourism, prostitution, and the ‘mail-order bride’ industry still plaguing Ukrainian society, Femen say they still have a lot demons to fight at home.

Broken and Bruised: FEMEN marks Women’s day (PHOTOS, VIDEO)Naked

With elaborate make-up depicting bodies bruised, bleeding and burned by acid, four FEMEN activists have been arrested in Istanbul as they marked International Women’s Day with a bare-breasted protest against domestic violence in Turkey.
Standing in the middle of downtown Istanbul, the activists hoisted up banners and shouted down violence against women. All four women were quickly dragged away by police and detained.
A press release posted on FEMEN’s website said they had yet to make contact with the detained women.
The group claims the protest was intended to make “the governments of Muslim countries in South Asia recognize the reality of genocide against women, to publicize such cases and severely punish the perpetrators.”
Ukrainian-based FEMEN’s unique brand of public protest came just hours after a Turkish woman was shot dead by a relative. The women was apparently killed for leaving home following a quarrel with her husband.
The Turkish parliament is currently working on legislation which would stiffen the punishment for domestic violence.
It is currently unknown if the authorities will charge any of the women for the street protest.

Anti-abortion doctors could legally lie in Arizona

يمكن للأطباء أريزونا تكذب على الامهات الحوامل
Arizona doctors can lie to pregnant moms

The Arizona Senate has okayed legislation that will let doctors lie about an unborn child’s health and escape any related “wrongful birth” suits, which has some saying the state is trying to trick expecting parents from opting for abortion.
Arizona senators have called for a law that will, if passed, eliminate malpractice suits that are brought on by families that believe doctors willingly withheld information about their unborn children. In instances across the state, some families have sued physicians after giving birth to children with disabilities and handicaps that they believe doctors were aware of before delivery. Some state residents have waged lawsuits based on allegations that physicians were not clear with crucial information which, had the parents been privy to, could have led them to consider abortion.
If the new law is passed, doctors would not be liable in these cases for failing to make clear any and all risks the unborn child faces. Specifically, Arizona Senate Bill 1359 relieves a defendant of liability for damages in a suit “based on a claim that, but for an act or omission of the defendant, a child or children would not or should not have been born.”
State Senator Nancy Barto, a Republican Party member and sponsor of the bill, says she was shocked to find that lawsuits were being lobbed by parents believed their doctors purposely didn’t disclose enough information about the risk of birth defects and disabilities. "When I first heard of this issue, I couldn't believe that these lawsuits are actually happening," Barto tells KTAR News. "That some couples, after they give birth to their child that has a disability, would claim that the child should not have been born, and would sue to get damages."
Parents have filed both “wrongful birth” and “wrongful life” medical malpractice lawsuits over allegations that physicians were not clear or did not properly inform expectant couples that the children in question, while still in the womb, risked complications after birth. Parents have in the past pursued legal action for doctors they allege did not disclose information that could have caused them to abort the child, but if the Arizona bill passes, doctors who lie to parents over the health of a fetus would be free from these suits.
"The lawsuits that are being brought imply that the physician[n] is somehow at fault if the child is born with a disability," adds Senator Barto. If the bill passes, doctors would not be liable for complications after birth for failing to fully divulge on any and all information about the health of a fetus. Barto adds, however, that doctors that “intentionally or knowingly” withhold information could still be brought to court for wrongdoings.
If Senate Bill 1359 passes, doctors would also be spared from “wrongful life” suits, where undesired pregnancies are triggered following a vasectomy or other sterilization surgery that is assumed to render the patient unable to procreate. The Clinical Advisor reports that current Arizona law allows plaintiffs in these cases to sue for the costs of raising an unplanned child. Under similar verbiage, the bill reads physicians that could now be considered defendants will not be held liable “for wrongful life based on a claim that, but for an act or omission…the person bringing the action would not or should not have been born.”
Senate Bill 1359 now awaits a House vote before it moves further along in Arizona’s Congress.

Shepard Fairey faces prison over Obama "Hope" poster

Obama "Hope"

American street artist Shepard Fairey became recognized worldwide for his iconic “Hope” poster during Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign. Four years down the road though, the graphic artist is left gripping with the possibility of prison time.
Fairey, 42, will soon face sentencing for breaking the law during and after the development of the design that was parlayed into a promo poster for US President Barack Obama’s first attempt at an Oval Office bid. The artist has already been in and out of court over the legality of the image he doctored to design his final project, but as Obama campaigns towards a second term in the White House, Fairey finds himself braving for a stint in the big house.
Not only did Fairey fib about how he acquired the photo of the president, but the artist has now admitted to going to great lengths to cover his tracks. Fairey had previously settled with the Associated Press out of court over allegations of copyright infringement involving his use of an AP photo, but now a federal suit has the artist apologizing for tampering with evidence.
Fairey’s first admittance was an acknowledgment that he had lied about the image he acquired to develop the Obama poster. The AP had charged that Fairey had manipulated an image without permission, an allegation which prompted the artist to respond with a now-known lie that he actually was inspired by a similar but slightly different shot — one he argued was protected under Fair Use law. Fairey would later acknowledge that he made false statements and lied about the source of his image, settling all charges with the AP outside of court. Now, however, the government is seeking jail time for Fairey over his efforts in concealing that corruption.
Authorities attest that not only did Fairey lie about which AP image he used in developing his poster, but that the artist falsified other claims in order to support his own. In a recent statement filed by the US government, the country contests that Fairey “went to extreme lengths to obtain an unfair and illegal advantage in his civil litigation, creating fake documents and destroying others in an effort to subvert the civil discovery process.” Those are the charges lobbed by US Attorney Preet Bharara, who is seeking a prison sentence for Fairey for not the unauthorized use of an image, but his tampering of the evidence.
“I was ashamed that I had done these things, and I knew I should have corrected my actions,” Fairey told witnesses in Federal District Court in Manhattan last week.
Fairey pleaded to one count of criminal contempt and could land upwards of six months in prison, pending sentencing. He will be back in court this July to hear the decided term.
Associated Press Chief Executive Tom Curley issued a statement in regards to Fairey coming forth, wishing that“some good may come of this, by alerting judges and parties to the possibility that fake evidence may exist.”
