Nick Clegg has criticized Israel's Deputy Prime Minister because of his statements condemning Israeli settlement activity, saying it will not stop building settlements.
The Clegg - who heads the Liberal Democrat junior partner in the ruling coalition in Britain - had said Monday during a visit to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to London that the expansion of settlements, "an act of vandalism to assume the primary on which had been negotiating over the years."
Commenting on the announcement, said Danny Ayalon, Deputy Israeli Foreign Minister during a visit to Britain yesterday, "Clegg's comments give the Palestinians an excuse to set preconditions for negotiations with Israel on a peace settlement in the Middle East."
"I think it was inappropriate and unjustified and based on incorrect information, I think it was irresponsible to some extent." He considered it "far from the truth, and give the Palestinians an excuse to put more of the preconditions for the talks, and there will be obstacles to move forward in negotiations."
Ayalon said that Israel would not halt settlement construction as a condition for the resumption of full negotiations, "and the issue of settlements is one of many elements essential to the conflict, I do not think it is the largest component .., all these elements are interrelated and one can choose one and try to resolve it in isolation from other elements, all of these issues should be put on the table without preconditions. "
The Ayalon - who is visiting London for talks with the British government - that his presence at the same time as Abbas, who is visiting the British capital is a coincidence.
The Israelis and the Palestinians began "exploratory talks" in the Jordanian capital to discuss the possibility of the resumption of full negotiations to reach a peace agreement.
Abbas has suspended talks 15 months ago because of the expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank and called for Palestinians in the past to stop building settlements in the West Bank before further talks.
