Resigned as foreign minister Kevin Rudd from his post on Wednesday amid speculation that he would seek to overthrow with Prime Minister Julia Gillard that has pushed the country's government to a new crisis.
Rudd said at a news conference in Washington that he would return to Australia this weekbefore deciding on his future but he ended his speech by asking his colleagues in the Labour Party "in the best position to defeat the (opposition leader) Tony Abbott in the next election?"
Seeking minority government led by Gillard is struggling to restore voter support will bedropped if elections were held now. Is scheduled for the next general election in Australia in 2013.
Rudd said "I can not continue in the position of Secretary of State if you do not enjoy the support of Prime Minister Gillard."
"The acting supervisor of the only I can do is resign."
Gillard was ousted in a coup Brod within the party in 2010.
The senior government ministers have urged Gillard in the past week because of thesacking of Ruud continued speculation that he wants to restore the post of prime minister.
